Technology has seemed to advance beyond what we can even fathom and has been a problem-solver for the whole world. The advancements in technology have led society to many benefits, making it easier and more convenient for us – citizens of the world.
But has technology gone too far? Yes. Is it always helpful? No. There is a certain extent to which technology should be used, but sadly, today’s generation doesn’t understand that. They’re too busy with their faces shoved deep into their gadgets, failing to take into account whatever’s happening in their surroundings.
Let’s dive into how technology has impacted the current generation.
Low Self-Esteem
With so many social media applications taking over the current generation, kids today are obsessed with their looks and body types. They are constantly comparing themselves to other people through their social media platforms which leads to them feeling as though they’re not good enough. This lingering sense of not belonging can be severely hazardous to their mental wellbeing as it negatively impacts their self-esteem.
Exposure to Explicit Content
Through the advancement of technology, nothing is off-limits. It has become very easy for young individuals to access inappropriate material. For example, the increase in the usage of VPNs and proxies allows the younger generation to access blocked content and surf through explicit sites. This harms the young minds quite severely as they get exposed to certain things that should be off-limits.
Increase in Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is the act of harassing or bullying someone through the means of the internet. Cyberbullies are people who humiliate others with their online presence. Cyberbullies can either be anonymous or create fake personas to impersonate someone. However, teenagers who experience cyberbullying tend to develop certain mental health illnesses including anxiety and depression. Other disorders, such as eating disorders can arise as an outcome of depression.
Lack of Confidence
The newer generation is so occupied with technology, that they forget that there’s an actual world that exists outside their smartphones and social media platforms. Humans, in general, require sufficient one-on-one social interactions to grow into confident individuals. Exposure from the outside world goes a long way when it comes to developing a sharp personality. However, due to the enhancement in technology, kids nowadays have begun to stay isolated in their own little, and the lack of social interaction leads to them not having enough confidence to operate in the outside world.
Physical Immobility
The purpose of technology was to make things easier for humans. But, people, more specifically young kids of today, relying a little too much on it causing them to become physically inactive. The new generation is constantly dwelling on this massive whirlpool where Instagram tags and retweets are of sole importance. This leads to a lack of physical movement in young kids which may eventually cause many health problems such as obesity. Such health-related issues may also further worsen kids’ ability to focus and perform well academically. Thence are the negative impacts of modern inventions on the current generation.
